Every decision we humans make is based on hope and fear, yet we don’t articulate exactly what the fears are. A year ago I incorporated Hopes and Fears into Pros and Cons for my son’s college decision.

First we listed the benefits of the 3 different universities. Location, living arrangements, people, perceived opportunities, distance from home, that sort of thing. Then we ranked them in terms of Pros and Cons, Hopes and Fears on a scale of 1 to 10.

The Pros and Cons showed that we each chose the same university. The Hopes and Fears showed that we each had the same concern in various degrees of hope and fear. The fear was being distracted from putting in the effort. The hope was to remember to put in the effort. One doesn’t exist without the other. We tend to amplify fear (a state of powerlessness) instead of figuring out what practical actions we can take (hope).

Our fears were realized because of a factor we had no control over that was corrected only when one of us was physically present to deal with it, show our son how to handle it emotionally, and thus intuitively.

Anything that anyone says and does has a direct impact on the health of the person saying and doing and that of those who witness it. The body keeps the score, then the scorecard is passed down biologically and becomes a systemic belief. The easiest thing to believe is fear which is the inverse…
